This is, without a doubt, one of the most challenging blog posts I have ever written. It centers around the profound and unbreakable bond between my sons—a bond that remains intact even though my oldest, Dylan, is no longer with us physically. Despite the pain and loss, witnessing how my youngest, Mason, continues to idolize and honor Dylan is both heartbreaking and incredibly heartwarming.
A Bond Beyond Loss
Dylan lost his battle with leukemia, but the impact he left on Mason is indelible. Mason speaks of Dylan not with sorrow but with a bright smile, reflecting the joy of having had such a wonderful brother. In Mason’s eyes, losing Dylan isn't seen as a loss but rather as a gain—an eternal presence that guides and motivates him every day.
Living Through Memories
In our home, Dylan's presence is felt everywhere, especially in Mason's room, which is filled with Dylan’s belongings. Mason has embraced everything that was Dylan’s: from taking on his baseball number, #27, to wearing a hockey jersey emblazoned with 'Gervais Jr.' For Mason, these are not shoes that he has to fill, but cherished tokens that keep his brother close to his heart.

To Mason: The best Ginger brother ever. I will always be watching over you! Dylan Gervais 27
A Connection Like No Other
In my book, George's Compass, I wrote about their extraordinary connection.
Despite their six-year age difference, their relationship was deep and complex. They were more than siblings; they were soulmates, confidantes, and each other's pillar of strength. From the moment Dylan knew he would be a big brother, he began bonding with Mason, even talking daily to my belly about the adventures they would have. Their connection was palpable, built on a foundation of shared interests like hockey and baseball, and the countless hours spent laughing and playing together.
Even after Dylan's passing, Mason has become the keeper of their stories, ensuring that the memories of their shared joys and challenges remain alive. He talks about their adventures with such fondness and keeps the essence of Dylan vibrant and dynamic.

Signs and Symbols
Recently, Mason reminded me of this connection in a very special way. I had been seeking a sign, something to feel Dylan’s presence a little stronger that day. As we were heading out for a baseball practice, Mason opened the door and excitedly pointed out a butterfly—a rare sight, especially in early May. "Oh, mom, look at the butterfly!" he exclaimed. In that moment, I felt Dylan’s spirit; it was a message, a subtle yet profound reassurance that he is still with us, watching over Mason as the big brother he will always be.
Through Mason's eyes and heart, Dylan’s spirit endures, a testament to a brotherly love that truly stands the test of time. This bond, woven through the very fabric of their being, remains unbreakable and everlasting, a source of strength and inspiration for Mason, and a comfort to us all. Dylan may have left the physical world, but in Mason's world, he is and always will be his idol, his hero, his brother.
